Energy & Environmental/ESG Session: Microplastics and Forever Chemicals – Here, There, Everywhere
PFAS, or “forever chemicals”, and microplastics are two concepts that have entered everyday conversations in a big way. A growing level of consumer awareness and litigation across jurisdictions arising from the presence of these substances, in particular in food packaging, various types of coatings, personal care products, fabrics and water, has brought the issue to the forefront in recent years. Policy makers and industry players must react and adapt their practices as the public increasingly becomes aware of, and concerned with, the presence of forever chemicals and microplastics in the goods and products they consume. Talia Gordner and Cedric Meyer will focus on the environmental law developments across jurisdictions that seek to address the challenges and risks posed by forever chemicals and microplastics. Attendees will leave with a comprehensive overview of the various methods that jurisdictions around the world have taken to address these challenges, including implementing regulations, in many cases with heightened reporting requirements, as well as the growing push towards a circular economy and extended producer responsibility programs which shift responsibility of products back onto the producers.
